Where was George Leman Young in the 1901 census?

My grandmother married a George Leman Young, b 1868, who was an accountant from Worcester when she was 17 in 1893. By the time she was 20 she had had 3 children. I have her birth and marriage certificates and those of the children. She then left these three children to work in a pub in Leicester. Two were brought up by George's father and one by her own mother. I always thought George must have died, but could not find his death certificate. Now I have found the marriage certificate of their daughter in 1918 and found that George was still alive then. (at least, he is not recorded there as deceased). But if he was alive, where was he in the 1901 census? Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have a DOB & place of birth for George?

Just because he is not recorded as deceased doesn't mean he was. It depended on what questions the person registering the marriage asked and what answers were given. If he hadn't seen his father since childhood, he might not have known whether he was dead of alive.

What is the father's occupation on the marriage cert?

Hi Jim,

Yes, that's the last time he appears. I'm trying to work out why his young wife would have left him and her children. I thought he might have died and she had to move to find work to help keep the children. Couldn't find his death though I have sent for lots of certs. Then found him on his daughter's marriage cert in 1918, apparently alive.

Yes. That is her. I know she moved to Leicester and worked as a barmaid in a pub near the cricket ground. It is George's presence in the 1901 census I am missing-or his death after 1897 when his last child was born.

Thanks for helping,

Lyn.

I have been unable to find a death certificate. I sent for all the possibles. I know he was alive in 1998 because he had a child then, but he does not appear to be in the 1901 census. Thanks for helping.
