I was doodling around on Ancestry and found someone who looks as if he/she has people who could be related to me....right place, right time etc. So I decided to contact them to see if this was so....needless to say that person has opted to "not be contacted". Why then do they put this info on the site if they do not want any one else to contact them. Surely the idea is to gather information from other sources that you may not have, and vice versa.

Be wary of what you read.....
Just this morning I have found myself on an Ancestry tree.
I have the wrong parents, who have wrong birthdate.
My great grandmother died in 1885..( she didn't) but managed to marry in 1892 ( correct) and had a baby in 1910 at the age of 64.???

...and that's just a few of the glaring mistakes.

Maybe the information on the tree of your interest will give you pointers about where to look to confirm what is posted.

At least you know why they've not got back to you,I mailed someone back in Jan who has some conections to me..

I too have mailed people ,n ever been replied to as of yet.

Researching:

The flipside of that is that I received emails about my ancestry tree and I replied with a fair bit of info that amounted to them not being related but pointing them in the right direction, took a long time putting it together and then I got an email failed to deliver message about two days after sending.

Uploading a very large tree to Ancestry does result in a lot of emails and can mean more time spent on responding to those than time spent on your own research.

But Ancestry is a handy place to keep a back-up of your tree - and I believe if you stipulate no contacts, you are still able to share your tree with others, should you wish.
