Genealogy Chat

I have just been told that my great grandfather was in Court for manslaughter. He was acquitted, thank goodness.
I would like to try to find anything I can about the case in the archives of the local papers of the time (or anywhere!). I e-mailed The South London Express with no response so far.
It happened in about 1881, near the Willowbank Canal, outside a pub in Peckham, SE London. My great grandfathers name was John Briley.
If anyone can help - or point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it.

Hi Mary, Just re-thought and that may be too early for him. BUT, so many details are the same that I wonder if this may his father. Family stories can get so distorted can't they.
Any info about the case would be much appriated Mary.

The 1857 case involves theft of bristles. Unfortunately there are only a few details of the case, and the outcome doesn't seem to be reported.

His co-defendant was James Pritchett (a brush maker) of Kent Street, Southwark; John Briley was said to live opposite him.
