Do you have their birth references? It will(should!!) show Evas maiden name.

Thank you both. Al I know about Alan which isn't much is that he is about 10 years older than my dad who was born 1929. Up until a week ago I didn't even know of his existence!

Can't find an Alan Shingle(s)ton born up to the end of 1924.

Got 2 Alan Singleton in JAS 1921. One in Burnley, the other in Wigton.
An Allan Singleton in OND 1923 from Macclesfield.
Alan T Singleton in JFM 1924 from South Shields.
2 Alans in JAS 1924. One in Blackburn, the other (Alan H H) in Leicester.

None with maiden name of Smith.

Sorry, but I'm not looking through Smiths for him lol

Were the two children they had before marrriage registered in your Grandfather's name or her previous married name?

Kathleen/Orangeblossom
Thank you. I can't find the marriage cert as yet (my filing system needs updating). She must have been married previously as she couldn't marry my Grandfather before 1946 as her divorce wasn't through. They had 2 children before they got married in 1946.
With your info I'll now look for a marriage to a Singleton.
Thanks again both of you.

Did William and Eva have any children?

Found an Eva Frances Shingleston born in 1903.

AMJ 1903
Thanet 2a 1066

Her birth name, in theory, should be Smith because of the way the names are listed on the index.

On a search of Ancestry, there is no birth recorded for Eva Francis Shingleton (at least not on the transcribed index), but there is this birth for Smith:-

Name: Eva Francis Smith
Year of Registration: 1897
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Ticehurst
County: Kent, Sussex
Volume: 2b
Page: 115

Does it give an age for her on the marriage certificate?

Kathleen
Thank you for this. Can you recommend what I now do to proceed to get any of her Birth or 1st Marriage details.

Ok, I found the marriage reference for William and Eva:

OND 1946
Stanford, William V
Spouse: Smith or Shingleton
District: Brentford
Vol: 5e
Page: 290

Do you have a copy of the cert?

I don't think the name is double barrelled. In the marriage index to William Victor it has her surname as Smith or Shingleton. I think she probably had one of the names but used the other as well - it could have been her first husband's name or someone she lived with.

That's the problem. I don't know what was her maiden name. I think it was Smith. I don't know either where Alan was born other than he was about 10 years older than my father. I am assuming it may be Surrey as my father remembers visiting Eva when he was small after his mum died.
Don't think this is much help to you but thanks for replying

Is Singleton-Smith her previous married name, or her maiden name?

Do you know where Alan was born?

I am trying to find the details of the second wife of my grandfather Eva Frances Singleton Smith. I have tried BMD and Ancestry for both Singleton, Shingleton and Smith entries but no results that match. They married in 1946. William Victor Stanford was a widower and she was a divorcee. Eva previously had a son Alan but don't know anymore about him either other than we think he was b approx 1919. How does anyone find someone with a double barrel name please.
Thanks Di
