Exactly.

It's scary to think that that's the way my uncle had to do it 30 years ago!

I think either Philip is making up his father, or his mother remarried & he's under another surname. I couldn't find any Phillip/Philip/Phil/Pip/etc born c1848 in Norwich & environs.

Ozi.

Thanks for your help.

I had started checking the 1871 census page by page for Norwich but after 60 pages I'm going buy the cert. What's 7 quid eh?

Absolutely no sign of him or a possible family before 1881. You'll just have to buy his birth cert.

Sorry for the delay, I'm looking for Philip Dugdale born about 1830 in Norfolk (I presume). On the marriage certificate of his son to Julia Playford in 1874 his occupation was listed as Sawyer.

I would also consider trying an F in place of a Ph in case they were illiterate.

On Ancestry I'd use Phil* or even Phi*

Have you tried Philp or Phelp?

Hiya have you tried phipps, phips or even Fripps? Transcibes can be very wrong especially on census returns in my experience! Good luck

How else can you spell philip/phillip?
