obtaining certs

Yes certificates started Sept 1837 but that doesn't mean to say all will be found or even have certificates, BMD registration wasn't compulsary until 1874

tx and how far back can you order certs is it back to 1837

For births, marriages and deaths registered in England and Wales, you may apply for any certificate if you have the full GRO index reference. In the case of events in the last 50 years you will be prompted to supply further details as you complete the application form.

just wondering how to obtain birth marriage death certs for ancestors. Do you have to prove you are family , I cant believe they give them to anyone. What are the regulations regardsing obtaining such a cert ?
