Maybe you can tell by the area they are in or look on other names they may have same occupations.. or search the 1851 see if that helps.

Hi Claire
Thank you for your reply. His name is Thomas Hume age 25 born scotland and lived in the borough of lambeth, parish of st Mary Newington, Surrey and it look's like Leafalgar st. The one i am looking for was a book keeper on the 51 census and then he was in Liverpool

Weird, I've found him now but he definately doesn't come up if I search by name!

I would say he lives in Trafalgar Street, still working on the occupation...

Nope, sorry! I would say it was more like Cl but I still have no idea what it could stand for, it's not one I've come across before. On the next page there is another one, it looks like that particular enumerator had his own set of abbreviations!

Look what I found.
Cl. ~ Clerk (1841-61 Census)

This is from a list of census abbreviations on this website http://homepage.ntlworld.com/hitch/gendocs/abbrcen.html

I haven't looked at the image, but if it looks like Cl, could it be Clerk (bearing in mind he was a book-keeper?)

Angela

No it is "Cl" with the collator's mark crossed through it so it looks like "Ck".

It makes sense that he was a clerk, Scottish children were more likely to be educated than those in England & Wales.
