If so, you may be interested in a new series starting on Saturday 5.55pm on BBC2.....COAL HOUSE.

3 Welsh families are trying to live in a Welsh mining community as if it was 1927.
They will be living in old cottages in Blaenavon, trudging to the pits, no indoor toilets or electricity......

I believe series has already started in Wales.

Also posted on General board.

Thanks Gwyneth

This looks very interesting. My grandfathers and great grandfathers mined both coal and ironstone. I will have to remember to watch it.

J.S. ....I've seen houses rather like that at the museum at St. Fagans, near Cardiff.

My grandparents lived on the Vale of Glamorgan after he left the mines and they had a ladder in their back kitchen.
It went up to a bedroom with really low windows which had been partioned to make 2 rooms, - one accessd through the other.

Running water...when they got 'modern' was a standpipe outside by the concrete stile near the front door.....
Toilet was way down the garden path....

I have sent myself a reminder to set the recorder for this as they were all coalminers on my Grandfathers side!

Gwyneth,

Thank you so much - I have only just looked at this thread so I have under 15 minutes to spare.

1927 is about the time that my grandfather was a miner in Pontrhydyfen so I shall be glued to the screen.

Best wishes,

Lynn
