How Do I Do This on FTM Please

FTM will actually allow you to enter as many dates as you wish for an event. You have to make one your "Preferred" fact. In the case of a birth date the preferred one will appear on the screen. Both will appear in reports, however.

I use it a lot for names where there is some ambiguity as to the correct one.

Just click on Edit Individual then add fact from the General Tab. Highlight the one you wish to be "preferred" then click the Make Preferred button.

Thanks for that Ron

I started putting them in as alternative parents but decided it would be better to leave them off and just put a note in 'Anns' folder as to possible parents, have the same problem with another male ancestor as well, dont want to mess up my tree.

Thanks for the advice

I would not put them into the database until you have got the right people.

We get a lot of databases for printing trees and come across this all the time, they show up as a mistake and make a mess of the tree because people forget to take out the incorrect people.

I think I have sorted it as best I can. I have put born between 1781 and 1784 in Greystoke or Crosthwaite and put a note for Ann detailing the two possiblities.

Just need to find out which Ann is mine, it is definitely Ann Gaskarth.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi

I need to put in a different date of birth for each set of possible parents, and it wont accept the word 'or'.

I would think that you've got 2 seperate people there. I f you want to add them both to your tree I would suggest you add one of them as an unrelated individual until you decide which one is yours. You can always merge them afterwards.

It sounds to me as if it's just the way you are writing the date.

FTM will accept 10 Dec 1781
It won't accept 10th Dec 1781.

Have you tried writing the date in a different way?

I have just found a couple of possiblilities for one of my ancestors, Ann Gaskarth.

I have Ann Gaskarth daughter of Thomas and Peggy of Whitbarrow christened 10th December 1781 in Greystoke Cumberland and Ann Gaskarth daughter of James Gaskarth and Ann of Keswick christened 19 December in Crosthwaite cumberland.

I have figured out how to put more than one set of parents in but cant get the different birth dates in or christening dates, it comes up with ' it contains a character I dont understand'. Any ideas would be very much appreciated, just spent a couple of days at Kendal Record Office and have so much information and lots of alternates for people, need to sort out all the alternatives for everyone.

Thanks very much for any help.
