I have two older siblings. When I applied for my father's army records, I signed as next of kin. Actually, I had checked with a professional researcher, who was doing some work for me, and he said to go ahead and sign it myself; after all, the MOD wouldn't check up on who was next of kin. I sent a copy of my father's death certificate, my birth certificate and marriage certificate, to prove my identity.

My mum signed for my grandad's and she isn't the eldest. I then just had to send a copy of her marriage certificate as obviously her name was different. I'm not sure how they even check to be honest.

Not 100% sure but I would think that as their parents have both died all the children would have equal status and could sign.

I printed off a form to apply for access to my grandfather’s army records for the Second World War. I need written permission from his next of kin and as my grandmother is not alive that would be one of their children.

Does anybody know whether it would do to have my dad sign it even though he isn’t the eldest child? Or does it have to be the eldest child or the eldest boy?

Thanks for any help given,

Vicky
