I was wondering wether anyone could help me with something...

on a census form..where it says "condition as to marriage" i have found there to be maybe an abbreviation of some sort...im not sure...it looks like a square M.... 3 diagonal lines and 1 horizontal going across the top...what does this mean?

Thanks in advance!

Jo

The M is for married and the other line would be the mark made by the enumerator

Got to agree with Roy on this.

Mother Eliza is shown as married

It's just a letter 'M'.......(married)

The enumerator's idiosynchratic way of writing the letter.............

If he was not at home on the night of the census then he would show up at another address or if he was in one of the armed forces or merchant navy he may be overseas
