Is it possible for me to find out who someone married without purchasing a marriage certificate. My step mothers grandfather George Stelfox married I believe in 1851 4th qtr volume xx page 462 in Manchester. However I dont want to purchase this marriage certificate if it is not the right one, I think that he married a girl called Jane, unsure of sirname.

Many thanks

Angela

Work backwards using the info you are sure of..........

Which of your stepmother's parents was a child of George and his wife?

Find that person on a census with his/her parents, so you will know you have the correct family..........then look for the marriage.........

Alternatively, look for the child's birth reg'n, and purchase the cert.......to learn MMN

1861 census does not show a George Stelfox with a wife named Jane.........perhaps she died and was replaced?

Thank you all for your help, I have since found that George Stelfox middle name was Warrine, and have found him in 1871, 1881, 1901 census with his wife Jane. Giving George's birth abt 1834 and Jane's borth abt 1843. I also now have all their childrens names, however with the oldest child Mary Jane Stelfox being born in 1854, it would have meant that Jane would have been 11 when Mary Jane was born. So I am presuming that either Jane's birth was incorrect or Jane was not the maternal parent of Mary Jane or her immediate siblings, there were in actual fact 8 children all together.

Probably you need to look for a second marriage. The obvious gap on the 1871 is between Sussanah born 1863 and Thomas born 1869.

Always verify facts by buying the certificates or you could end up going back centuries on the wrong line.
