Thanks to everyone who has PM'd me and replied on here especially Joan.

Well it looks like he wasn't adopted as I have his birth cert and it says nothing on there about adoption. I never knew that it was recorded on the certs so I have learnt something new today.

So we're now off to re-trawl the marriages and deaths to see if we can find him but that's a damn sight easier then finding an adoption with no details lol.

Yes you are right Gwyneth, the original entry of birth and any cert. sent for should normally have 'adopted' written on it.
This will only tell you if he was adopted or not. If he was adopted then your search becomes far more difficult. Is the aunt your refer to the sister of the uncle you are searching for. If so, then she may be able to get some help as the law was changed a few years ago to enable siblings to search for eachother. It is still a fairly complicated task. One of the best things you could do is to contact Joan Allan who is a wonderful helper and searcher. If she can help you she will. She posts regularly on here I will try to find one of her postings and nudge it up for you

I think....but not sure...that if you sent for a copy of his birth certificate and he had been adopted it would be noted in the far right column.

Have you checked deaths around that time...or is it possible that he was ill or disabled in some way and was put into a home / institution?

I want to search for my uncle's adoption but have no real info to go on and don't know where to start.
I did put a post on the adoption thread but had no luck.

Basically family rumour has it that my uncle was sent away to an orphange in about 1945ish in Cornwall from London. We then suspect that he was adopted in about 1954 as my aunt remembers officials coming to the house.
The problem is we have no idea if he did go to Cornwall, we just know he went away. We have no idea if he was adopted or not and if he was we don't know the name of the family who adopted him.

All in all a bit of a blindspot to say the least and there are no relatives who know any more details. So can anyone give me any advise of what I could try or is this just too much of a challenge?
