I'm trying to find someone on a census record but he may have been at sea. Is there any way of finding him on a census record?

Those who worked at sea were also often missed from a census

The census was for people actually resident in the country.
Ships/boats at sea are not included.

I have a couple of census entries where fortunately it says next to the wife entry "wife of seaman", so I assume he was away at sea, but I also have a load of Cornish ones that say that the wife is married but no sign of a husband so a possibility they where at sea also, but I don´t know that. . I also have someone on a census taken on a ship which was in dock at Portsmouth, so maybe some census were taken if the ship was in port, but I´m not sure if that was a just a one off and not the norm. Can be very frustrating!

Anyone that was on board a ship in a british port was entered on the census, my own county Lincolnshire has surname indexes which can be searched.

The cornish online census has shipping listed, certainly for 1861 and 1891. I can't see it for 71 but I expect its there.

Someone has put together info on Royal Navy ships and their whereabouts at 1901 census. Does not give names of crews but if you've tracked down your rellie's naval records and know which ship he was on at the time you at least know where he was!

Found one of mine out in China - involved in the Boxer rebellion!
