My great grandma was born abt 1882. Her marriage certificate states that she was married in Barton in Irwell in 1905 but I just cant find her on either the 1891 or 1901 census. I know her father was called James and I've probably got his occupation on the certificate as well (think it was labourer unfortunately). Any help much appreciated!

Carrie

Carrie Report 31 Oct 2007 14:21

Where is Irwell, Manchester, Lancashire?

Who were the witnesses, any clues from their names?

Alison,
This is the only possible entry I can find. The 1891 census gives same details. The father is a widower and was a coal miner.

This certainly gives me something to go on. Will have a look at the certificate tonight. I've got a funny feeling the witnesses were her in laws the Tuckers.

Now thats interesting 221 Liverpool Rd. I'm sure their residence on the marriage cert was something like 171 Liverpool Road, How does the GRO work when you put a fathers name as a reference. Do they still charge you £7?

Carrie

Carrie Report 31 Oct 2007 14:47

With a reference, if its wrong then you get refunded either £3 or £4 , I can't remember which way round it is..

Alison, surely it can't be the 14 year old at Liverpool Road if she was born in 1882.

Just a thought.

My Gr,,Grandfather was a coal miner, but later in life he left the pits and was described as a "Labourer" on my grandfather's marriage certificate.
