But dont believe everything you find on Ancestry trees! Some of them are very much astray, and we wouldnt want you barking up the wrong tree.

Hi there, Ill nudge up some tips for newbies threads for you. And yes, get ancestry - try the 3 day freebie on at the mo for all the census and bmd info and lots more.

Don't do what I did & forget to record their occupations These are shown on the certs plus it's a good checking point on the census. Yes it can change from census to census but an Ag Lab is not going to become a Rocket Scientist during a 10 year period!

There is a free 3 day Ancestry Worldwide trial at the moment but you may be better taking advantage of the normal 14 day trial that just covers the UK

You've started very well, Shona - you've got back a couple of generations really quickly!

As Ann says, the poeple on the message boards are very helpful, so just ask.

One major tip - it's easy to spend loads on 'credits' from the site to view things that you can see for free elsewhere! For instance on sites like freeBMD, familysearch, ancestry, etc. And people will do look-ups for you on the Records Board on this site.

Hi Shona
Sounds like you are doing well so far, much better than I did when I first started!
Welcome to the site. The folks on here are really helpful.
Have a look at the threads for tips for newbies etc.
Like jacqui said it IS very addictive.

Hi Shona

Sounds like your doing ok.

Judt go back 1 generation at a time as you have.

Buy the certs to get parents names so you can look them up in the census and go back to the next generation.

Google the places they lived and go visit them aswell. And if you can go to the relevant records ofice so you can search other documents for your ancestors.

Hi Shona,

You're definately on the right track, but to be certain that you are tracing the right families on census records, it's always advisible to buy the birth, marriage and death certs as they give information which confirm their ages, parents names, addresses etc...

If you are tracing a family with a common name, it's all to easy to trace the wrong family.

HI IM NEW ONLY STARTED TREE LAST MONDAY AND NEED ADVISE ON WHAT TO LOOK AT AND DO

SOFAR IVE STARTED WITH MY GRAND PARENTS, THEN THEIR PARENTS.
IVE LOOKED AT CENSUS REPORTS FOR PEOPLE LIVING IN THE HOUSES FOR OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS THEN GOT THEIR BIRTH MARRIAGE AND DEATH DATES

IS THIS ALL I SHOULD BE DOING
