My ancestor is Frances Knight, born c1855 in Illogan, Cornwall. She married Alfred Tonkin in 1881 in Redruth. We know her father's name is John, and in 1861 I found the following :

Frances Knight age 7, daughter
Caroline Knight, age 4, daughter
Mary Knight, age 11, daughter
Frances Knight, age 46, wife
John Knight, age 38, head.
All born Illogan.

I can't find them in 1851. In 1871, I think I have found Frances and Mary living with John (Jno) in Illogan.

In 1881, Frances (b1855) is down as a niece to Frances Thomas, b1817 Illogan. Also down as a niece is Amelia Frances b1859 (born Pool). There are also 2 boarders - Alfred Tonkin (who Frances went on to marry later that year) and John V Skewes.

I'm getting thoroughly confused with these Frances' and was wondering if anyone could find something to help me out? I've been looking on BMD/Census etc on Ancestry etc but not found the missing link just yet!

Thanks
Laura

Aha. Thanks for that. Should try mispellings more often!
Still confused as to why there is also a Frances as an aunt, can't seem to find a marriage etc, maybe just a common name? Hmmm

Thanks again Pete

Do you know the name of John's father?

Is it Peter KNIGHT a ropemaker?

Peter KNIGHT (sometimes KIGHT on Ancestry!) has a daugher Frances living with him in the 1861 census. She listed as Fanny in the 1851 census.

Perhaps she married sometime after the 1861 (perhaps father has died and she didn't need to be his housekeeper any longer.

FreeBMD has a possible marriage for KNIGHT/THOMAS

Thanks Pete. That looks likely! I just couldn't get over so many Frances' in one family - I know it's a popular name etc, but still thought it was unlikely!

Thanks for that though, will add that to my notes and try and follow it up.

You're a star!

Also - where did you get the parish baptism info from - was it IGI or somewhere else? I have a lot to look at from Illogan and it may come in handy!

Thanks again

Laura,

Try http://www.familyhistoryonline.net/

it costs a few pounds but is a really useful site for some pre-1837 records, particularly for Cornwall.

Thanks Pete - Will check out the link.
Lots and lots to look for in Cornwall so it sounds worthwhile!
