This site has improved enormously and become much easier to use in the last year.

I would recommend reading up on using the advanced search facilities as they can make a big difference, especially if you are unsure of details or have a common name.

Great site, not only managed to find a fair few butchers/farmers/shopkeepers in Co Durham but also managed to find out that one shop is still standing!

Historical Directories is a digital library of local and trade directories for England and Wales, from 1750 to 1919. It contains high quality reproductions of comparatively rare books, essential tools for research into local and genealogical history. Could be worth a look
