Tree Software: Major Cut & Paste

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

After much gnashing of teeth and tugging of hair, I have sorted out the problem and am back online with a corrected and functioning tree on Genesreunited.

My first GEDCOM files must have been faulty or corrupted.

Thanks everyone.

Thanks everybody. I did succeed in cutting and pasting the relevant tree branches using FTM, and it all looked good.

Sadly, I now can't upload either the new edited GEDCOM to GenesReunited, or the old GEDCOM that I downloaded as a safety measure! I just keep getting error messages from the GenesReunited team saying: "The file could not be loaded: An unknown error has occured. The support team has been notifed."

As a result, I have no tree on the website at all!

Arrgh!

Don't know what you are using at present time, but I did the similar thing a couple of times in the last few months. I use Roots Magic at £15.00 it's a steal, all I had to do was to unlink from one son and link to another simple as that, it doesn't disturb any of the tree or underlying data.

Can you not simply switch the personal details between the two brothers?

I have FTM software. It does not seem to like cutting and pasting when there are two people who have the same name. In my case I have two cousins called Charles (their fathers were brothers). FTM seems to want me to delete one of them to complete the pasting operation.

Can anyone recommend family tree / genealogy software that is capable of cutting and pasting an entire branch with several generations without messing up or losing all the data?

It is a long story, but I have discovered that my tree shows me descended from the wrong brother 5 generations back!

Basically, there were two brothers who both had a son called Charles in about the same year, in the same village. A marriage certificate proved that I had connected my line to the wrong brother!

Luckily, one brother was childless, so all I need to do is cut and paste everything from one brother to the other.

Any ideas which software package is capable of doing this without a horrible mishap?!
