I am looking for Gustav Seifriz b. 1844 - 1850 (conflicting b. dates on things) in Braden, Black Forest, Germany (taken from 1881 census).

In 1881 he is living in Neath in Wales, but I can find no record of him before this. He worked as a clockmaker. Would there have been passenger lists for this period? Where might he have left Germany from and travelled to? Swansea?

Also, is there any way I can look at records in Germany for him? Did they have censuses?
Any help would be great, im not sure where to start with this.

its a passenger lists for Hamburg 1850–1934. I cannot make head or tail of it.. I am looking for Gustav Seifriz (or other possible spellings) emmigrated from Germany to Wales before 1881. Any help understanding and searching the above website would be great. :)

Rachel, he doesn't come up on this one on Ancestry. Nor anything really like Seifriz.

Rachel, the Hamburg Passenger lists are 486 rolls of microfilm at the Family History Library.

Yes, Gustav may be on them but you have to know when he emigrated which unfortunately you don't. They are not online at present.

My "German" has changed nationality over the years, from German to Danish. He came from a rich shipping family!!!!! He met 2xgreat granny in Dundalk, Ireland. His name was Karl Mosskovitch (or a spelling near to the sound) and he Anglicised it in about 1855 to Charles Moss.

Well I have scrubbed out the Irish connection, and I am sure he was not from a rich shipping family, unless they disowned him, as census say his occupation was Dock Labourer. Only one census gives his place of birth as Germany, and as for the change of name, that is just the story that has been handed down.

I have only got back to his marriage in 1861, I have the cert. and on that he is Charles Moss, Mariner. His father is named as John Moss, mariner.

Did he Anglicise his fathers name from Johann Mosskavitch????

No, no luck with 1871 at all, have looked at all gustavs in england and wales.. any other ideas??

Kathlyn - you got a problem ! This guy may be a bit older than I expected but, out of interest I did a search on 1861 Census and found :

Charles Moss age 40 Dock Porter born Germany
Sarah Moss age 40 born Ireland
Charles Moss age 7 born L'pool
Joseph Moss age 4 " "
William Moss age 2 " "

- you did mention German/Irish connection ! this ne has a sorta marine connection but not Mariner !

On the other hand there is a marriage in Stepney in 1861 so presume that one is younger.

Have looked and looked for Mosscavitch but if your guy was Ex-Germany then his name would not be spelled with a 'v' - more likely to be a W for the 'v' sound. Keep getting the Moscovitz name on various IGI sites - or Moscowitch, Moscowitz, Mouschkowitz but little to show. Do you know the religion ? Evangelic/Protestant, Catholic, Jewish ?
if you have the marriage cert it may show by the church where the event took place. Somehow I doubt Jewish if he married an Irish gal.
I guess you can put me on the right track if you have the marriage cert which will show his father and his age - was he a bachelor ?? and the lady was a spinster ?? was there a big age gap ??
