if you look at the actual image if often tells you if they are relations or servants etc

Penny

Penny Report 5 Nov 2007 21:40

its likely they were lodgers or boarders and possibly mean the family squeezed into a smaller number of room, in order to generate income, especially if they were not so well to do.

Joane, have you not got ancestry? If not take the 3 day free trial - no card details needed and then you can check all the census info yourself and look at the images of the documents. Just enter the following address in your address panel:

http://landing.ancestry.com/popularmedia/hs1.aspx?landingpage=3DF_nc&o_iid=32618&o_lid=32618&o_it=32845

You need to look at the image every time as it can give different info to the transcription. In this case these girls may have been renting a room in the same house - not related at all to your lot - just paying rent to the same landlord - you would be able to see that info from the census image and the lines which enumerators struck through to show a different household or part of a house.
