Offline Tree Software - Best?

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

I've been storing my info all on GR with taking a Gedcom backup into PAF but was wondering what is the best offline family records software? I'd like to be able to store images (census etc) and photos against individuals. Printing out decent pedigree charts would be nice.

Neil, a lot of us on here use Family Tree Maker, it is a very flexible programme that allows storage of images etc, and had some excellent treechart printing options. I believe FTM 2008, is the latest version out, but not tried that yet, have heard mixed reports about it. Ealier versions can now be bought quite cheaply.

Hi Neil

I would personally recommend Roots Magic it does what you want to do, I find it a very easy programme to use with lots of features and at £15 its a steal.

Just looking through ebay and i can see several versions of FTM 2005 with 6 or 12 CD sets containing records - are these worth getting or is it just reproductions of data available freely on the internet? Also are there major benefits of FTM 2006 vs 2005?

Neil, 2006 was a minor upgrade to 2005, not much real difference. Depending on the price (I believe you can still get the WDYTYA version for under £10) the additional disks may be worth it, but usually contain information available elsewhere, and limited areas. Normally dont bother with extra disks myself.

Hi Neil,
I have recently upgraded to FTM 2008 and it's great.
It will do everything you want to do.
It only cost £19.90 from TWR computing

Neil, you can get the FTM2006 for a tenner from several places online including a sub for a fortnight or more ancestry. FTM2006 v16 is the most flexible - better than FTM2008. FTM2006 has a number of advanced features over FTM2005 and no, you dont need the discs.

Hi Neil
I looked on Amazon for price of FTM 2008 there was one review which a longterm FTM user had purchased and he didn't rate it at all, don't know if that's of any help to you.
