Hi

Anyone know why two children who appeared on the 1881 census as grandchildren appear on the 1901 census listed as 'children' of the grandparents. 1881 they were 4 adn 4 months respectively.

Seems a bit odd.

Do their parents appear on either census? Maybe the grandparents "adopted" them.

I can't establish who the parents are at the moment as grandparents had 11 children and I'm struggling to pin point all of them at the moment On the 1901 census the two 'children' are living with the grandparents with no parents listed/staying at the address at the time of the census.

Have you checked the image? Had a similar query recently - children living with an aunt - on checking the image, the parents and the rest of the family were living next door>

I'm not sure its a mistake - both the 'parents' were 74 so wife would have been 50 and 54 when she had the two 'children'.

Perhaps the real parent was a single parent and died and they simply stepped in.

Its a bit of a mystery!

I have a similar case on the 1901 with my relations
grandchildren living with grandparents but stated as children:

A boy aged 6 shown as grandson (born 1895) and his sister aged 9 shown as daughter (born 1891).

The girl has the same surname as the grandparents. The boy has the surname of his father.

Both children were born out of wedlock.

The children`s mother married 1898 but is living with her sister approximately 10 miles away in a little village, on the 1901 census, husband was in the Army.
