just for clarification, I don't actually use 'match suppression' in my own tree, at the moment. I was merely offering a suggestion of how this was technically achievable.
I leave it up to Graham's personal judgement to what extent he applies it.
One, obvious, drawback to my suggestion is that the tree is slightly 'defaced' by the extra characters and these will affect the appearance of printouts as well as what goes into your GEDCOM exports. It could become a pain having to hunt for and remove them all, on each such occasion.
For comparison, one drawback of using the 'discard matches' system is that, should you ever want to retrieve one later on and the discard pile has become quite large, then the fact that the contacts' identities are all forename-only makes it that bit more time-consuming to locate the one you actually wanted to restore.
I fully agree with all the arguments raised against suppressing matches and the value of making new contacts, even in the more distant family branches. The reasons why sections of the family became remote as time went by or why someone had emigrated are bound to be fascinating to find out about.
Finally - at the risk of stating the obvious and no offence intended - for hotmatches to appear at all, let alone on a regular basis, a number of conditions must be satisfied:-
- Other branches of the family must actually exist;
- They must be actively pursuing the family history;
- They must have progressed as far back as the nearest common ancestor you have in your tree;
- They must be using the GR site _as well as or instead of_ any of various other alternative ones;
- Usual stuff, like name spelling & y.o.b. must match exactly;
- Unusual stuff, like they've got sidetracked onto a false ancestral trail or stopped by the proverbial brick-wall before reaching the n.c.a.
All of which is outside your control and that of GR, so all you can do is sit tight and wait for your rellies to catch up with you on their research progress.
I would be concerned to learn that there were technical problems which cause some users to be deprived of matches which are due to them, subscriber or not.
For instance, one of your contacts reports to you that they've got in contact with a third person, following a hotmatch on a particular entry who you are sure is also in your tree but you haven't been given the same match.
Is that the sort of thing you have been encountering?

I also agree with Peter, thats how I got some relations to add to my tree, and as well as that some people had other stories to tell.

Mark, what do you mean, Hot Matches are only updated every 14 days?
I sent a message to Genes to say that I had had only one lot (and that was unnotified) since 27 Sept. I should be on my 3rd lot by now if they are updated every 14 days.
Their reply was:
"Due to very high demand, our hot matches are currently running slower than normal. This is why you have not received one for more than 14 days. I am sorry about this but you should receive one soon."
It seems to me that they should amend the piece at the top of the hot matches page to say IF you are one of the favoured ones then you MIGHT, if you are lucky, receive them every 14 days.
How can I demand that I have more NOW? Perhaps when there is "high demand" they should send them only to the paying customers.
I find even 'side line' relatives are good to have there. Their descendents might be able to help with a brick wall, or I might be able to help them.

Graham, I agree with Peter. Some of the other names in your tree, may have a story to tell about the main people. This way for a few minutes of your time replying to a hot match, you could have some fantastic stories to go with your names, very valuable I think.

But why? This is a bit like weeing on your own shoes, or cutting off your nose to spite your face.
One of the main reasons you put your tree on here is for other people to find matches with your names and contact you in the hope that you might be related?
If you find you don't actually match with a Hotmatch suggestion then just disregard it.

Hi Graham,
The quickest and most easily switchable thing I can think of is to suppress matches by inserting a random character, like so: -
Surname ---> _Surname
in the tree entry for selected people.
The hotmatches are only updated every 14 days so it will still take time for them to be cleared from your hot-match lists.

I do not think so.I just discard those I have no interest in.
An alternative to hot matches is"my tree matches"(bottom of page).this takes you to "surname summary".There you can click on a surname from your tree and then an individual..

I am looking through my 'Hot Matches' and it is putting matches up against everyone in my tree, but in reality now that I have added more people to the tree there are a lot of partners and children that I am not interested in tracing further.
Is there anyway of filtering the hot matches to only search for specific people or family surnames?
Any help would be appreciated.
