This is probably the death of Francis' mother Sarah:

Deaths Dec 1892 (>99%)
Bovey Sarah 77 Lambeth 1d 225

Sarah's with her husband John and children in 1841, but says she's living on an allowance from her husband in 1851.

Can't find a likely marriage for them in the IGI, and can't find any of them on the 1881 census.

Lesley, all you needed to do was look in the earlier censuses.

I've had a look now, and Francis Henry Bovey appears with his mother Sarah and brothers on the 1851 census, born Lambeth, aged 7 (ie. born about 1843-4, which fits with the birth entry I found on FreeBMD).

He's also with her in 1861, incorrectly shown as a daughter.

Have you ruled this one out?

Found a possible in 1871 but with a wife called Sarah

Wish I could find him in 1881 but nearest match is for a Boyce

The birth might not have been registered.

Registration began in 1837 but become compulsory in 1875

I am trying to trace/obtain a birth certificate for my great grandad. His name appears as Francis Bovey on my grandads birth certificate.
In the 1891 census his name is Francis Bobby born 1846
In the 1901 census (ancestry.co.uk) he is Franerese Bovey born 1851 and in the 1901 census (1901 census on line) he is Franicsese Bovey born 1851. I believe this is the same person as the wife and childrens names match and the address match. I am really stuck now as to what to do to continue to trace him. I have been through the births at the record centre but no luck. I would be greatful for any suggestions.
