I borrowed the book issued by the Imperial War Museum from the local library.

It's called Tracing Your Family History Army .

ISBN is 1 901623 35 1

There is a lot of helpful info in there so it's worth a read.

According to their lists of numbers -
1,617,175 is part of the series 721,001 - 1,842,000

Until 1924 this was broken down further so that 1,400,001 - 1,842,000 was Royal Artillery - Royal Garrison Artillery. It does not explain what happened after 1924 so it may be that George was part of the Royal Garrison Artillery.

Do you know his parent's names and where they were from? There is this George Maskill on the Commonwealth War Graves site:-

My Uncle, George Maskill, was killed in 1945 and I believe he was in a Tank Regiment. Can anybody tell me how I can find out more about his military record such as his regiment etc.
