Ha, ha - great! It also makes me glad that I am not alone.

Thanks all for your replies. Now, I just need to work out if he is Edwin in the census of Edward (there are 2 born in the same place in the same year so i need to be careful that I find the 'right' family.

Many thanks once again!

I also have an Edward who was Edward on all census from 1851 and Edwin in 1901.
That threw me, Best wishes Joan

I have an Edward on a marriage cert and think he was born Edwin so yes it can be interchangeable, could have been mistranscribed on any of the census records.

I have the same problem.I decided that enumerators converted Ed. to whatever they fancied.

I had an Edmund born 1860, and on his marriage cert he is now Edward! It took me a while to figure out these were the same person!

I wouldn't be surprised if they were. I have a Josiah in my family who crops up regularly as Joseph.

Some names are like that!

Yes, Edward and Edwin have definitely been interchangeable in my family, even an Edred in one case.

Hi

I was wondering whether anyone could advise me on a potential issue I am having with my MIL's family tree. I know from her grandfather's marriage cert that his name was listed as Edwin. His father is listed as Edwin too. However, my SIL has on her tree from a while back that his father's name was Edward Charles. However, she got info from all over the family and now can't remember where she got it. Now, as it includes a middle name (which my MIL never knew) I am assuming that it is from Edwin Jnr's birth certificate - perhaps. I have ordered this.

I was wondering though if anyone could advise before I get it whether Edwin / Edward was or is interchangeable.

Thanks in advance

Jo
