Ibid (in italics) means when used in a book.
A following example is in a book I received today and found at the back of the book in the reference notes section is
'Richard Stanford to Sir Joseph Banks, 4th January 1813, Ibid., 31.'
Thanks in anticipation

Thank you. How do I now then find what this relates to. Do I find the 1st Ibid in the reference notes and then look for the book? Hope this makes sense. lol Di

ibid should be used only when the immediately preceding reference is what is being referred to

OR if there are a number of references made to the same AUTHOR for information published in the same paper/book.

SO

a) look at the immediatley preceding reference

b) look for the same author and date

Might be silly question, but does the 31 refer to the page number in the book?

Ellen and Sylvia
Thank you both.
The book is about King George 3rd and his Spanish sheep. One of my ancestors was a the head shepherd to him and the book I received today was written in 1964 and has details about my ancestor.
The earliest ibid I can see in the reference notes is
'10. Cf. , Henry Lacocke to Sir Joseph Banks, 8 October 1799, BM(SC), 11, 8, 5 - 6 for the prices of these sorts in 1799 ibid.,
So using your explanation I think the reference would be in BM(SC) which isThe British Museum (National History)
Sorry this is long winded but I am so excited at finding my ancestor and want to trace this further.

Thank you. I did 'google' before putting the thread on but only found about IBID press which didn't explain it as well as you all on here.

Keith,

yes, '31' is the page number in the reference where the comment or whatever will be found.

Keith
Thank you. The 31 must indeed be a page number but not for the book I received today as he is not mentioned on it. It must be for the BM(SC) book.
Thanks everyone for being so quick to respond.Sylvia, I had to buy the book from Australia but it was well worth it.
