An English death certificate will tell you:-

name of dead person (as known to informant)

age of dead person (as known to informant)

date of death

cause of death

marital status of dead person (as known to informant)

place where death occurred

who certified death

informant's name, occupation and whether present at death

If there was a coroner's inquest, and the result of that inquest

registrar's signature.

Name, age, marital status ... all depend on what information the dead person told people while they were still alive!!

Hi Sylvia
Thank you. Would it say in the marital status bit the name of her husband if he outlived her?

Di

It could/should say "Wife of ......." and even may say his occupation

or it could/should say "Widow of ......., and his occupation

Again, it depends on who is the informant and how much they know/have been told.

Back then "Wife" or "Widow" was counted as the occupation!!!

Sylvia,
Sorry one last question. When did the first death register start as I have a death in June 1837 and wondered if a cert would be available for then.

September quarter 1837

if it was very late in June, it might have been registered at the very beginning of July, and thus made it into the September quarter!
