Try googling 1881 pubs - this has a list of lots of pubs from the 1881 census.
You get more results just putting in Eagle Sussex. There is one in Hasting All Sts.

Hastings museum has a large archive and may be able to help - you may need to visit yourself and use their study room

Hi Tracie,

freeCEN only has coverage of Hastings for 1891.

Bourne St. is still present and, using the previous/next household buttons, I was able to look at each address in turn.

It was enumerated from number 17 to number 1 but there is an un-addressed entry between number 12 and number 11. No indication that it's a pub of any description.

Ecclesiastical Parish: All Saints
Folio: 65 Page: 10 Schedule: 72

Strolling further in the 'previous household' direction took me through 'Plesant Row' (sic) and a few others, before emerging on All Saints Street, so this is down in what is now known as 'Hastings Old Town'.

Use Google Maps to find "The Bourne, Hastings" then zoom in to maximum power and, where the A259 bends, heading away from the seafront, you should see a tiny alley, marked as "E Bourne St".

To me, this implies that the other half of it got redeveloped in some way.

Hi all

Thanks for your replies. I have taken a look at the census again (1861), and he is living in Bourne Street (I think), the pub is listed I think underneath the street name and number it looks like its Eagle Tavern???, does this name sound familiar to anyone.

What year are we talking about? What census have you found him on? The local records office may have the license applications or you could look in historical directories.

If he is actually a licenced publican then he would normally be living at the premises on that census you found.

Hi

I have just discovered one of my ancestors was a publican and I was wondering if anyone know if there is anyway I can find the name of the pub he worked in, any ideas.

On one of the census he is down as a fisherman and a publican and my mother in law mentioned that one of her ancestors smuggled someone into the country and he ran a pub, they hid the immigrant in the cellers so you can see why my curiosity is pricked.
