We have been googling Sylvia and there are some references. It's just knowing where to look for the history when locally there doesn't seem to be much.
One ref., does say that it was an execution place in the 17th century for those accused of witchcraft, so it could have had a different name at some point.
Daughter is in Scotland at the moment so she'll have a good trawl round.

Thanks Julie and Maureen,
Will give daughter this info. I'm wondering if the address is just Gallowhill, keeper's cross possibly being the workers cottage, rather than the owner/occupant.
This is where she's having difficulty, not much to go on, and very little history locally. Gallowhill sounds very ominous to me anyway. Hanging hill comes to mind.
Thanks again Maureen for taking the time to have a good look. Much appreciated.
Cheers M.

Hi Margaret,

Was trying to find that address last night but not having any luck.

Could not even work out which registration district it came under. Does not appear to be many people born in Ballindalloch

Actually the Scottish census on Ancestry are easier for searching by address than the English census.

Hi Margaret
Have you tried the Moray Heritage centre in Elgin.
They hold a lot of searchable records there and are very helpful.

Glitter Baby,
I agree, just checked it out on google, coming up Banffshire, the Cairngorms. Don't know why she said Aberdeenshire!!
Is an address lookup possible?
Someone did one for me in England, no probs, just not sure if it can be done for Scotland.
Cheers M.

Is it really in Aberdeenshire?

All those born in Ballindalloch come up as Banffshire

Does anyone know if an address lookup from the 1901 census is possible to see who the occupants were in Aberdeenshire?
My daughter has bought a cottage, Keeper's Cross at Gallowhill on the Glenlivet estate, Ballindalloch and is hoping to compile a history of the place. Any ideas welcome. There are names written on the walls but she thinks they may have been "beaters" working there, not the actual occupant. She's done some research in the area, but nothing is coming up, all very vague. A real challenge I think.
Thanks to anyone who may be able to input.
Cheers Margaret.
