Sent for g grandparents marriage cert. It is the correct one but name of g grandfather is Edward in name /surname column (this is correct) but in the this marriage solemnized between us his name is Joseph which is his fathers name.

I assume as he made his mark he didn't see the error!

As you say, I would assume it is just an error by whoever was filling in the register, and as he was illiterate then wouldn't have realised there was a mistake before he made his mark.

Yes but his new wife could write and she didn't see it so maybe she could only write her name and not able to read.

Thanks

Linda

I have a cert for grt grandads bro , he was George Dartnell but its down as George Dartner. his bride was an Etterley but shes down as Hetreley. both dads names & professions tho confirm its the right couple and as neither could read or write . they made their marks, then they wouldnt have known it was wrong.
I put in down to accents George was a SE Londoner but married in Medway area of Kent

Hi Linda,
This is related to marriage certificates, but a different discrepancy.
I have my g grandparent's marriage cert from 1868,and although I know for a fact that she was 19,she is down as 24,and he is down as younger than I believe he was,as there was supposed to be almost 20 years between them, and as he was born in Tipperary,as I think in 1831,he is my brick wall.

They married in Devon,as he was in the barracks there, now the question I would ask,is was it illegal to lie about your age then?Should you have a birth cert in 1868 to prove you were of full age, when I presume full age was then 21?
I know the family were against the marriage,as they weren't the same religion, and the witnesses were obviously friends,as I don't recognise names.
She only made her mark, but his writing was really lovely copperplate,so at least he would know that it was wrong!
Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Hi Brenda, in those days a birth certificate was not required to prove the age. It technically would have been illegal, but if nothing was said, then so be it.
It actually happened quite frequently.

Thank you Keith.
I thought that would be the case.
