How to find a address

I think that Front Street in Ferryhill is different from Front Street in East Howl. East Howl is a tiny place, and if I can remember there is an old school in ruins, a gypsy site, and one street. I have just been on multimap, and the street is not mentioned.

Marilyn

It is possible to search for any parish in any year.

A parish may cover several districts but Ancestry also have the parish descriptions available, these list the streets for each district and can help you find the district you need.

A couple of links to explain how

On the 1881 census on Ancestry you can type in the address. Having said that, however I just tried it for 3 Front Street and it didn't work. I tried Ferryhill, Ferry Hill, East Howle and Howle. I also tried St. and Street. No luck.

If you go to the search page on the 1901 census and then scroll down the page you get a list of counties. Click on Durham.

When the next page comes up scroll down and find Ferryhill. Click on that. It will give you three enumeration districts. You have to look at the description of each district to see if the name of the street you are looking for is in that district.

In this case Front Street is in the first district that comes up (district 9). Then you click on "district 9" and scroll through the pages until you come to the address you are looking for.

3 Front Street, Ferryhill in the 1901 census looks like Obadiah Geldard (can't read the writing very well).

You can search 1881 by address, then see if the same people are living there in 1901. Or check the names of some of the neighbours and see if they're at the same address in 1901.

If you have an ancestry sub search through the parish image by image till you find the street. That is how it had to be done before the census was indexed on the internet.

Alternatively you could use the official 1901 site on a pay per view basis but unless the address is listed exactly the same as your search criteria you won't get a result.

For example Street won't match if the index is recorded as St.

If you want a link to searching for a particular parish via Ancestry then i can pm it to you
