AB is able Seaman as alreay stated, he would have started as an Ordinary Seaman and been advanced to AB. Once there he could be promoted further.

AB is Able Bodied Seaman,
Thats where the B comes from.

I only know my dad was an Able Seaman in his time in the MS. in WW2.

My father was in the merchant navy - doing his apprenticeship between 1955 - 1958. One of the examinations he had to take was for a Certificate of Competency as A.B at the port of Liverpool. Does anyone know what A.B. stands for please.
