As far as I know the first proper census was 1841.

I have heard that earlier census were taken in some areas but they were little more than a head count really and it definately wasn't across the whole country. I am sure other members will be know a bit more.

There were census taken from 1801 but before 1841 they were mainly just head counts. The 1841 is the first useful census for family history.

You may find earlier census for individual parishes on line but they are few and far between.

As Lost for Words asks above, have you checked the IGI?

This has records of births marriages and deaths from the 1500's.

Is Baldwin her maiden name or married name? Do you have her on the 1851 and later censuses as well?

You would need to look at parish records for the area. You can see these at the county records office for the area or order them on film from your nearest LDS Family History Centre (addresses for these are on www.familysearch.org.

These are also some parish records on the IGI (also on the above website).
