Any more ideas on this one? I really don't know where to go next!

Laura Report 24 Nov 2007 19:26

Just found the details from the marriage certificate, they're as follows :
Stoke Damerel Registry Office 8th Feb 1863
Michael Ward 24 1/2 years old, bachelor, seaman G????? HMS Buzzard (?) residence 16 cannons street(HMS Cambridge) (?) H???? Devonport
Father = James Ward, deceased. Farm labourer at Wicklow ? Co Wicklow of Ireland

Isabella Chope Baker nearly 24 years spinster loiving 57 cornwall st, devonport father = william Baker deceased, = coach proprietor in Plymouth, Devon"

I've been looking on the Dublin/Irish Family History Site - has anyone else used it? Is it good? There are a few James Wards etc in the area, how would I know which one it is!?

Laura

Laura Report 19 Nov 2007 16:24

argh! it's so frustrating! I had a look at one of the Irish family history sites but there seem to be so many it could be!

Laura

Laura Report 18 Nov 2007 20:38

Looking back at some emails to a contact, I think we did agree that wasn't the right Frances/Isabella, although frustratingly we can't seem to find others that fit!

Michael's father was called James Ward, and was a farm labourer in Wicklow, Ireland. He was deceased by the time of the marriage in 1863

Thanks again!
Laura

She is down as Isabella Chope Baker on the marriage certificate, and from Barnstaple, but I can't remember her father's name until I find the certifcate!

A possible 1871 match for Michael :-

b1841 Arklow, Wicklow, Ireland. Coxsn Barge. Naples Harbour, in the Royal Navy on the Prince Consort.

Kingstown in Ireland is the old name for Dun Laoghaire apparently, which is near Dublin. There is a seaman record for Michael Ward from Dublin, 1855, but there's also one for William Michael Ward from Devonport, 1863.

Think I've got the certificate, will have a look through this evening - I've been concentrating on another branch but decided to come back to this one again with fresh eyes! (or so I thought)
The Bideford comes from the 1851 and 1861 census - if that is indeed the same family.

I know Michael Ward came from Ireland, so am wondering if he was the one that came from Kingston.

Another puzzle with the family. Michael's mother is called Charlotte and was born in Bideford. In 1881 she is with Elizabeth Lenschan, Janetta Lenschan and the Ward family (Isabella, Michael and their children) in Plymouth. As Charlotte Ward, b1821 and down as Mother. bBideford.

1901 she appears as Grandmother to Florence (who has now married Alfred Townsend) and is down as Charlotte Jago. Although I can find a death for Michael Ward I can't seem to find a Marriage for a Charlotte Ward and ? Jago....

More questions and no answers! Sorry!
Thanks for your help!

I think you're just going to have to buy that marriage certificate of Isabella Chope Baker & Michael Ward in order to find Isabella's father's name. It's 5b 620, Stoke Damerel.
I'm not convinced that Isabella Chope Baker and Frances Isabella Chope are one and the same but can't find your Isabella on a census before the marriage.

1881 gives place of birth as Barnstaple so where does Bideford come into this

Could it be that her details were mis-copied?

Could she have been a Baker by trade but this was added to her name?

I think you need a copy of the marriage certificate and see how it is worded.

Do you have the marriage cert.?

Laura

Laura Report 18 Nov 2007 12:25

I have a marriage between Michael Ward and Isabella Chope Baker in Mar 1863, Stoke Damerel, plymouth.

I can find a birth for Frances Isabella Chope in Mar 1842 Bideford, and I think this is her in the census

1851 Bideford
Alice Chope 1844 Bideford dau
Caroline 1839 Bideford dau
Eliza 1804 Bloomsbury Middx wife
Eliza 1836 Bideford dau
Isabella Frs 1842 Bideford dau
Robert 1835 bideford son
Walter 1801 bideford head
Walter Langford Chope 1838 Bideford son

and in 1861 Bideford

Walter 1799 head Bideford
Caroline 1839 dau Bideford
Frances 1842 dau Bideford
Walter 1837 son Bideford
Fanny Denby 1843 Sidmouth Visitor

But where has the Baker come from for her marriage? I've looked for variations on FreeBMD etc, or other marriages but can't seem to find any. Her mother Eliza died in 1855 it seems, but even if the father remarried it doesn't seem to be a Baker. And her mum's maiden name was Hyatt according to FHO!

Argh!!!! Any ideas?!

Thanks
Laura
