Hi

I managed to obtain the bond and allegation for my 3 x great parents.

Here is a guide and a pdf you can download on marriage license and what the bond and allegation can tell you.

Hi Priscilla

Banns were read for three sundays prior to marriage so that any objections/impediments could be raised.

A licence was quicker, obtained from the appropriate authority which governed the particular area or church that the couple wanted to marry in. First they made an 'allegation' (which was an intention to marry with the couples details on it) then the licence would be issued (for a fee).

So it is sometimes worth seeing if the allegation still survives.

In order to marry in church the Banns (announcement of fothcoming marriage) have to be read out in the parish churches of both the bride and groom three times in the weeks before the marriage.

Sometimes, in order to marry more quickly a special licence can be obtained and the Banns do not have to be read.
