Hi
a relative was born in the Union Workhouse Infirmary in Fulham London in 1898 i have his birth cert and there is no father named. that is probably one thing i will never manage to find out.
could someone tell me if i could find out if his mother had applied for poor relief or any benefit. she married in 1900 to a man 28 years older than her i think it was to get out of the workhouse and went to live in hampshire
anyone got any ideas where i could find this info .
she actually came from wiltshire so dont know if she left to go to london because she was pregnant or if she got pregnant in london
elizabeth jane carter born 1846 aldbourne wiltshire
her son was harry carter born 1898 union workhouse infirmary fulham london
thanks linda

The records for Fulham Palace Road Workhouse are at the LMA (Closed until mid? January)

Fulham Palace Road Workhouse — Admissions and discharges (1873-7, 1890-1); Births (1866-1915); Creed registers (1879-1914); etc.

Elizabeth should be in the Creed Register if she was in the workhouse. Shame the admissions and discharge documents don't cover her time frame, you probably would have got more detail.
There is also the possibility that she only gave birth there because it was a difficult delivery so may not be in the Creed Register. I'm not sure if they completed it if someone was just in the infirmary.

For details about the workhouse itself

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/

and put Fulham into the search box,it's the 2nd result.

Just because a relative gave birth in the workhouse didn't mean they were an inmate. They could just be taken into the infirmary to give birth. The Fulham Union Infirmary was very big and not just for inmates. My nan was born here in 1886 and her mum worked nearby as a cook at a vicarage, just went in there to have nan.

Carter are you sure that this is his mother? 52 seems a wee bit old to be having a child.
