I assume that you have researched your family as far as possible on the 1841 or 1851 Census which will show the person as a child in family giving the names of the parents.

The only avenue open is by going to the IGI -
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

and input the name of the male parent. From the Census you should have an idea of the year he was born +/-2 years OR by looking at the ages of the children you can guesstimate the year of marriage and hopefully find the female parent whose forename will agree to that on the Census.

As people did not move around too much in those days you can also look at the Parish Records (when available) at :

Please note that the IGI and the first Parish Register listings are provided by/through the LDS and I recommend that anything that you find should be checked at the archive local to the event. AND do not be surprised if the person is not listed.

Further : Have you tried Google-ing the family ? IF you believe that yours is a British family ONLY then try Google.co.uk and insert "Surname Genealogy" or "Surname Family History" - you never know !!

I look up wills as well, it is amazing what turns up. And google in the name, you never know.

You have to search parish records. There are some on the Family Search site (www.familysearch.org) and various other websites, depending on which counties you are searching. Try googling for the county and Parish records.

could someone explain to me what you do once you get back to the 1800,s,how do you get info to go back even further.Any ideas or pointers would be appreciated.
