I had George et al on the 1891.

I don't have Ancestry.

On the death certificate he was still a Tin Plate Worker, 1 Edmonds Place Bermondsey..

I am not sure whether George lived or just worked there as Eliza Foulser (widow) was living at 9 Drivers Buildings, Mile End Road. at the time according to the cert.

As prev. mentioned George was 'not at home' in the 1901.

Rita, on the cert, what was his occupation?

Select 1901 census - then scroll down and select London - then Rotherhithe. At the bottom of the list of enumeration districts is shown District Saint Olaves Union Infirmary with Saint Olaves Union Casual Wards - there are 31 images.

All the people on the images seem to be named so if George was there it would come up on name search.

How and where did you access the complete register? Was it on the 1901online, if so what did you key in.

If not where else did you access it.

I would like to know for future reference as other rellies might have ended up there.

Yup, I think that he was probably in the Infirmary.

If he was in the Infirmary would there be an Index online, do you think?.

Poor devil. The death certs often have a note of how long someone has been treated. It would seem likely that he was ill at the time of the 1901 wouldnt it.

No, to how long he was ill but as the cause of death was carcinoma of pylorus I would suspect a longish time.

Trouble is most hosptials and institutions only name the patients by their initials. On his death cert does it say how long he had been ill?

St Olave's Hospital as a general hospital serving the Rotherhithe area of London until its closure in 1985.

Built originally as the Rotherhithe Infirmary in Deptford Lower Road (now Lower Road), Rotherhithe, London in the early 1870s on land adjoining Rotherhithe Workhouse, the buildings became the infirmary of St Olave's Union by Order of the Local Government Board in 1875.

After being known as the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe Hospital in the 1920s it was renamed St Olave's Hospital in 1930 and transferred from the Bermondsey Board of Guardians to the London County Council. In 1948, with the formation of the National Health Service, St Olave's was managed by the Bermondsey and Southwark Hoapital Management Committee until 1966 when it became part of the Guy's Hospital Teaching Group.

Since the hospital's closure in 1985, the site has been redeveloped into the residential Ann Moss Way.


I sat in that hospital many a time when I was a child - with my two nans, grandad and various other rellies as patients.

I have looked for the following on the 1901online but cannot him.

George Foulser, born 1857, Hackney Rd, Bethnal Green, Middx.

On the 1901 he was 'husband not at home' with wife Eliza Foulser.

He died 'aged 44' in 'St. Olave's Union Infirmary' Rotherhithe, Bermondsey in January 1903.

It is possible that he was in the Infirmary in 1901 but I can't trace the Infirmary but this may be because I am keying the Institution incorrectly.

I have tried 'Foulsen' as a possible mistrancription but no luck.

Anybody willing to give this a go?
