The trick isn't to google the name of the register office, the most "likely" match that google will show first is always the ukbmd site which is the one mentioned in the first post.

Not only do they charge way over the odds but the certs they supply DO NOT come from the local reg office but come from the GRO.

If you want to search for a local office use one of the two methods described below;

#1 Use the county boards on the wiki section of the FTF website, there is a (virtually) complete list of all English, Welsh and Scottish register offices complete with phone numbers, addresses, e-mail contacts and website links

http://www.familytreeforum.com/wiki/index.php/The_British_Isles

#2 Google for the local council, then on the council homepage enter "registrars" or "birth certificate" in the site search box. This should then give you a link to a page within the registrars section and information about certificate orders.

Just an update. My local register office did phone me back yesterday. They had found the certificates that I wanted and would put them in the post last night. Should get them tomorrow. Thank you to Pontefract Register Office!

Sue, can't you find a phone number for Portsmouth and see if they will do the same for you?

I tried Portsmouth Register Office and clicked on the link thinking it would take me straight to the register office but it came up with www.bnd.certificates which were going to charge £25 for each cert and I needed 2 certs.

When I saw the price I thought I would either travel down from Yorkshire or ask someone on the records board if they lived in Portsmouth and were going to the Records Office to check for me.

I have tried that site Frances, was lucky to find my great x 4 grandparents on there. Very useful site.

Just ordered them by phone and they will check them and ring me back. They are from my local office, but I find it easier to order online or by phone. Can't believe these people (BMD-certificates) are ripping people off.
Their express service was £60, but I will probably get mine tomorrow for £7 each.

Weve had a few instances on here where people were charged up to £50 for a cert. Dreadful.

Maggy

i have had that happen to me but luckily, like you, I knew better than to use the site.

It does worry me that anyone new to ordering certificates could very easily part with more money than they need to.

Try the GRO General Record Office, ordered two certificates last week, £7 each with reference numbers, and one came yesterday, the other I am still waiting for, but despatch was supposed to be yesterday.

I've just been looking on the internet to order some certificates from my local register office. Typing the name into google brought up a link to order them online, which I thought was brilliant, until I realised it was through a firm charging £25!

Hope no-one has fallen for that one!! Think I'll give them a ring instead.
