hi good morning
my 5x greatuncle graduated from oxford uni in 1802 sadly almost all of the records have been lost from that time.
what id like to know is would this have been very expensive to go to
and would he and the rest of the children beeen educated?. i dont think his brother my 5x greatgrandfather went to uni ive not found a record of this, but could they have gone to another school? they lived in the Fareham area of Hampshire, im not familiar with the area at all were they any schools in the area i could try to find records from about the 1790 to 1820?

Winchester isn't too far from Fareham and has Winchester College.
The College was established in the 14th century by William of Wykeham, and has always had 'scholarship' boys - intelligent poor boys, who were educated free or at a reduced rate - the school was initially set up just for the education of the poor. Perhaps your gt x 5 uncle was one of these - hence the only one to go to uni.
There is every chance that a scholarship boy from Winchester college could then go on to get a bursary to study at New College, Oxford (also established by Wykeham).
They have archives from 1394.

ill take a look hope they still have records.
i thought perhaps it was maybe a scholership or something for him to go to oxford!
the family werent poor, but they werent rich either although down on his almuni his father is described a gent.

Ah Sharm - if he paid he would have automatically gone on to New College nomatter what his exam results LOL

Still happened until fairly recently that children from private schools automatically went to a university affiliated with their school, no matter how thick they were - AND they 'magically' got a degree LOL

hi there
I got his almuni from ancestry (a kind member on here found that for me) but ive not tried the national archives always forget about that site.
well it says he was at magdalene hall oxford uni.
he eventually became a solicitor so i think he did well.
another thing thats puzzling me is on his almuni it says his father was a Gent, i know he was a Mans Mercer and did have a property in Gosport does that mean a similar thing?.
i shall try maggie to see if i can get any school records from winchester in case he or his brothers went there.
