does anyone have any tips - have tried every source I can think of ie Ancestry/FreeBMD/IGI and have also been to local family records office but can find no birth record for Gt gt gt grandfather born around 1810.

Catherine, you need to give full details of the man for anyone to help. What solid facts/certs/censuses have led you back to him and what do you already know about him/his family.

Name William Gibbs - traced on all census from 1881 back to 1841. Always gives Deddington, Oxon as town of birth & he lived there until his death. most of family stayed there until death or marriage as well

There is a William Gibbs on IGI but not 1810

Baptisms need not be at birth either.

I have a few ancestors who waited a few years and got a group christening of the kids on the same day.
