Here is a useful chart to print off.

Sometimes it is easier to see it as a chart. If each column represents the descendants of siblings in generations.

Shared ancestors

A -------siblings-----------B

C------1st Cousins-------D

E------2nd Cousins------F

G-----3rd Cousins-------H

I------4th Cousins-------J

For this chart persons G and H are 3rd Cousins but I and H are third cousins once removed to each other, as are G and J to each other. E and J are second cousins twice removed.

Hope that helps

If I can give an example....
My cousin's child is my cousin once removed, ie. one generation away from myself.
That child's child would be my cousin twice removed, ie 2 generations away from myself.

The 'removed' person can be generations younger or older than yourself.

It means that you are a generation apart. Either your parent was a third cousin of the other person or their parent was a third cousin to you. Either way you're a generation apart.

Somebody sent me a kinship report thro Family Tree Maker, and it says she is a third cousin once removed, can someone please explain what that means.

Thanks.
