Hello,

Are there any kind welsh speakers out there who could translate a gravestone inscription for me please. This is from my ggg grandfather's grave and I have got the inscription from the transcribed records of graves. I have tried the internet but all I can get is some of the words, not all of them so I can't make sense of the full inscription.

It reads -

Ith meirwon mab duw'r marwedd yn addaw
newydd oes diddiwedd
cyfodant buaf adwedd
i dir y byw o dyr bedd
Iolo Morganwg

Iolo Morganwg was the stone mason and poet who carved it I presume - I have found lots of information about him on the internet as he was a famous bard.

If anyone can help it would be brilliant.

Many thanks, Lynn

I have a friend who is Welsh.....and Welsh-speaking.

She isn't on line, so I would have to wait until tomorrow, but if you don't get any luck...........send me a PM to remind me, and I'll see if she can help.

this is an old poem in Welsh probably written by a family member, i dont understand it much and i'm a welsh speaker

Problem is that when you translate welsh to english, nothing makes any sense, i've translated to english for you but you can see it makes no sense at all

Ith meirwon mab duw'r marwedd yn addaw
dead boy god ' group o heat promising

newydd oes diddiwedd
news is there unending (newydd can also mean new)

cyfodant buaf adwedd
they raise death (never heard buaf before)

i dir y byw o dyr bedd
aground the live he breaks grave

Iolo Morganwg

Stephanie,

Thanks for trying - it looks like it is something to do with eternal life - my father used to speak Welsh but I guess this inscription is probably the same as ancient English - no-one speaks it anymore.

I am grateful for your help,

Best wishes, Lynn
