A Journeyman meant he had finished his training as a waterman (sort of like an apprentiship)

I have a rellie waterman journeyman and he was on the coal barges in and around Walsall staffs.

Andrea

I have rechecked the 1871 Census and a number of other husbands working as watermen were also with the Lighters. A lighter was a type of boat

Thanks Kay and Potty, definitely have some more to go on now.

I also feel like I'm beginning to get to the bottom of what Henry did for a living (see Waterman Thread).

Hopefully, I'll be able to repay some favours when my sub is sorted out (and check for mistranscription - hadn't thought of that!)

Thank you so much Kay, I really appreciate that. Diseased liver? What a strange thing to have on the census?!

That's especially useful because I've been trying to find exactly what Henry Hobbs did. He is named as a Waterman on his daughters birth cert and a Journeyman Waterman on an earlier census. Waterman with the Lighters sounds intriguing! I'm just going to pop onto google!

Thanks for looking.

Sissy could be a mistranscription of Lissie - capital L and captial S can look very similar in some old handwriting. Check the image when your sub is sorted out.

Sorry to be a pain but I wonder if anyone could check that birth record for Elizabeth for me as I would like to order the cert but not sure I've got exactly the right details down.

Also wondering if Henry can be found on any later census'. I know Elizabeth ended up in the Workhouse - wondering what happened to mum and dad.

Thanks very much

Sorry Pam, just re-read your post and noted that Sissey becomes Elizabeth, so that looks really promising doesn't it?

I'm going off to google what a Journeyman Waterman was?

I knew my day could be saved! Thanks so much to all of you.

Thanks guys!

I have just double checked my records. I think I found Elizabeth's birth (last time I could get into Ancestry) as registered Jan/Feb/Mar 1848 St Ives (14, 24). I haven't sent for certificate yet but obviously I really should. (If you could check GRO reference for me, I'll do it today!)

I did find Elizabeth 1871 to 1901 census (she married a George Lantaff in 1873) and each time her EYB comes up as 1847 so I am fairly confident on the DOB.

You've got me wondering about Sissey though? Is that a deriritive of Elizabeth I wonder? On later census' she is known as Lizzie and Lizzy. (Just to confuse things further my mum thought her name was Till (Matilda?) I'm fairly sure that is not the case though because I have her marriage cert and her children's birth certs - always Elizabeth.

Thanks again for looking - I really need that birth cert don't I?!

Hi,

My Ancestry subscription has been messed up (long story - charged twice for same period, then refunded, then no access at all, now have access to US but not UK! - hopefully will be finally sorted out on Monday).

In the meantime, I wondered if someone might have time to have a look for a Henry Hobbs for me. He is named as the father on my g. grandmothers marriage certificate (Elizabeth Hobbs) and was a Waterman. (It doesn't say he was deceased)

Elizabeth was born in St Ives (Huntingdonshire,Cambs) in 1847 so I was hoping to find them on the 1851, 1861 census. I have found Elizabeth in the Union Workhouse, Hemingford Grey, St ives in 1871, unmarried with a 3 year old daughter.

If anyone could help, I would be really grateful. So cross with Ancestry, I had planned a whole day of researching and I can't view any images!
