Lots of websites with records about the Channel Islands but as Jan says civil registration didn't start until the mid 19th Century. For Guernsey births and deaths registered from 1840, marriages from 1842 (1840 for non-anglican).
Some of the Channel Island websites you might like to try are:
www.channelislandshistory.com (they will do research for you but its £10 a hour)
www.societe.org.gg/sections/familyhistorysec.htm
www.gov.gg/priaulx
and finally one which I think is good:
www.rootsweb.com/-jfuller/ci.html

Can anyone help with a query for my friend.

she's looking for a birth cert for someone from Guernsey in the late 1940's and has been told that birth certs aren't issued at the time of registration but a couple of years later....................is this correct?
