Seems strange that they couldn't find any record of the declaration, doesn't it? I hope you manage to find more information in the parish records.

I am going to try ringing the Camberwell register office and see if they have a record of the declaration for my relative. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for your reply, that's interesting. In my case I believe the person named as the father was a bigamist and I wondered if there was any connection to this and the amendment. I would really like to find out what the Statutory Declaration says and hope to be able to pursue this.

Also when I rang the register office to enquire, they couldn't find any record of the declaration except for what was written on the birth cert and suggested the Parish Records/Chest could help.
Haven't chased it up, the births were in Colchester 1917 and 1920

In my case ie same situation as yours sounds, my greatgrandmother had to make a statutary amendment because she had 2 more children after her husband died and the father she named for both was her first dead husband. At the time of the second birth he had been dead 5 yrs!!!
On the birth certificate in the final column, it states that

the father's name and occupation were to be removed following a 'statutory declaration made by ....

It has been suggested to me that she may have been receiving money for the children somehow and someone reported the truth,

Hello

I am a bit confused and would be grateful for any advice/explanation any of you could give me on the following?

I have a relatives birth certificate (born 1932) and along the side of the certificate it makes an amendment in 1933 to remove the fathers details. It says amendment made on production of a Statutory Declaration made by both parties i.e mother of child and person named as the father of the child.

Could this mean that the person named as the father is not the father after all and does anybody know if I could obtain a copy of the Statutory Declaration and if so where from? The birth was in Camberwell, London.
