Sorry, not a sausage, not by hammer* or alethea (mother or daughter), throwing in and taking out birth details, not nowhere. Maybe someone else will have more luck! Alethea lends itself to mistranscription, of course, but nothing I've tried to work around works.

Maybe he left them on the Nile??

just trying to work out birth place and year for Alethea

That's the one I was going by -- and searching by that info for Alethea (or althea, or ale* or ali* or no given name) Hammersley (or hammer* or hamer* or no surname) ... etc.

No death found for the daughter, and tried searching by her birth details as well.

No apparently relevant deaths; two marriages in the 1890s for Alethea Hammersley-s, but no apparent connection there!

I do wonder whether Alethea mother and daughter maybe weren't abroad. Not sure what socioeconomic class we're talking about, but it might be a possibility.

She was a Shave:

Marriages Dec 1888
COOK John Risbridge 4a 1059
HAMMERSLEY Isaac Risbridge 4a 1059
SHAVE Alethea Emily Risbridge 4a 1059

-- maybe we should go back and verify those birth details, or look for her with Shaves in 1901.

Me, I got work just arrived in my inbox, so I pass the torch!

I think they might have been in ireland him being a soldier???

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 29 Nov 2007 22:29

If they were in Ireland, you'd be out of luck, as I understand it!

Was he actually "a soldier" in 1901? He's lodging in the household of a bricklayer with three other ordnance surveyors, and the census notation for their occupation is "Civ E", civil engineer, I imagine. Might he have gone civil service or private sector rather than military by then?

(I'm not familiar with the specific term "ordnance surveyor". From googling, it seems to be what's just called a surveyor, in my time and place.)
