I'm sorry this is such a basic, how to do research sort of question but could someone please tell me the sort of information I would expect to find on an English Marriage and Death certificate and in the parish registers. Do they hold more information that the IGI?

Certificates hold more info than the IGI. The occupation and addresses of the couple, the fathers names and occupations, witnesses. I presume post-1837 parish reg would hold the same info. but am not sure about it.

That was marriages.
For deaths which dont usually appear in the IGI the cause of death, informant (might be a relative of deceased). Cant remember offhand what else. Havent looked at parish reg for post-1837 deaths.

Sorry I have not made myself clear. I mean the pre 1837 registers, is there more information if I look rather than just rely on the IGI.
Also should I find the names of parents on a death certificate or marriage certificate as in Scotland

Certificates for English/Welsh events only started on July 1st 1837. Anything earlier is only available as a parish register.

To view the documents you need to the relevant county reocrd office.

Sorry I really seem to have confused everyone.
Two separate questions here
First: Is the information for extracted records on the IGI the same as in the registers. If I view the registers may I pick up more information about a particular event? I'm talking pre 1837.

Second question: If I apply for a death certificate for someone who has died in England , post 1837 ( I have all the relevant dates/volume etc) will I find the parents of the deceased?

Yes ..you quite often find more information than there is on IGI but it is a bit 'hit and miss' depending on the vicar / clerk of the parish.
Sometimes a different parish is mentioned, sometimes a cause of death.....or what the vicar thinks it was..... sometimes a relationship is mentioned, eg younger son of Bill Smith of Mill Farm
You never can tell.

Only minor's parent ( usually father) is mentioned on a post 1837 death cert..If it was a Coroner's case you might not get that information.

You won't get parents details from a death certificate, no.

PR's have a little bit more info than the IGI, but nor much. For baptisms, the parish records will usually have the fathers occupation and address, although this is usually just a village name.

Marriages you will get the names of the witnesses, whether the bride or groom was of the parish or not, sometimes the grooms occupation and usually it will say if either of them was a widow/er.

Thank you all for your replies. What a shame there is so little on the death certificates. I've seen the scottish registrations on line which are great and I had a military certificate from Malta which was also very informative. Both parents names and where the were from and name of living spouse. I was hoping for more of the same.
